Chapter 12

“Are we swimming up together or are you meeting me at the top?”

Breya’s question interrupted his thoughts and Kon looked up. They were at the opening pool which would lead to the sea and the surface. Water swished about his feet but he’d been so lost in his own head he hadn’t noticed.

“I’ll follow you. It’s not safe to separate.”

Her half-smile was a shadow of what he was used to. Remorse edged at the back of his mind. His inner Dracol tugged at Kon’s control, wanting to comfort her and the female considered his other half. He took a step in her direction.

Breya shrugged, her gaze bland and lacking any interest in how they traveled. “That’s fine. I’ll go out first since I know you’ll be staggering your pace for me.”

Kon gnashed his teeth and cursed at himself. When would he learn not to respond to Breya’s need? She could take care of herself.

Focused once more, he removed his pants, more comfortable swimming bare. At Breya’s gasp, habit had him waving his hand in the direction of his lower half conjuring a swatch of purple material to cover his hips. Not that it was his favorite way to enter the ocean. She had always been discomfited by casual nudity.

As soon as he completed the action, Kon froze. He’d once more responded to her needs. He met her gaze and she studiously avoided looking below his chin. Kon smirked. “Let’s go.”

They neared the drain off and kept walking forward until water lapped at their waists. He eyed her in his soaked shirt as it clung to her frame. No matter how often he chided her, she refused to swim in the nude. It would have made her more flexible in the water.

As they reached the point of no return, he arched a brow since this was all about her pace. If he was with one of his own, they’d dive in and soar to the top in a flash, the Goddess blessing their bodies to adapt in the deep water. “Ready?”

“Yes.” Despite the confirmation, there was a slight quiver in her voice.

Kon couldn’t understand why. He’d escorted her to the surface and played with her many times in this very area. Then it hit him. The last time she’d ventured in the water, she’d been attacked. “You’re safe with me, Brie.”

***

It was the first time he’d used her shortened name in that gentle tone since she’d ended their relationship two years ago. Breya firmed her shoulders and launched herself forward.

Water washed over her face as she was completely submerged. A fierce kick propelled her up. Bubbles from her entry fluttered around her face but she ignored it to check for hidden dangers. Lesson number one Kon had taught her long ago.

Tiny sea creatures swished and darted around her, shimmering scales in brilliant blue a flash before her eyes.

Breya swam with sure strokes, heading up. Kon’s shirt tangled around her thighs and she was sure he had a clear view of her legs and probably between.
